Fashion World Reacts to the Killing of Cecil

A number of fashion notables are among the many who have taken to social media to shame Dr. Walter J. Palmer, the American dentist who killed Cecil, the beloved lion, during a hunt in Zimbabwe this month. In particular, the Victoria’s Secret Angels Candice Swanepoel, who hails from South Africa, and Behati Prinsloo, who is from Namibia, drew attention for the outraged comments they posted to Instagram.

Cecil was lured out of his sanctuary in Hwange National Park and shot and injured with an arrow. Two days later, he was killed by Dr. Palmer, who, reports say, paid $54,000 for the hunt. The lion was then beheaded and skinned.

Fashion the first cut as Myer slashes 100 brands

The nation’s biggest department store Myer is about to send shock waves through the often catty fashion designer community after deciding to dump 100 brands from its stores, coupled with a surprise “spring clean” sale today that could drag the entire industry into a cutthroat price war.

Haemorrhaging profits after years of lacklustre spending from downbeat shoppers more interested in frugality than extravagance, Myer’s decision to launch a massive promotional sale outside the traditional periods, such as the change of seasons or after Christmas, could force rivals to follow and cut their own prices to compete.

It comes as new Myer chief executive Richard Umbers prepares to clear the decks at his 67 department stores and introduce brands that he believes will better capture the interest of shoppers following decades of flatlining sales.

It is unclear which of the 100 brands Myer sells will be delisted to make way for new brands, but it is believed the brands extend across women’s and men’s apparel, as well as housewares and children’s wear.

Once the “spring clean” sale is completed Myer will introduce a range of brands including Jack & Jones, Calvin Klein White Label for women and men, Aji and Daniel Avakian.

Mr Umbers, a former executive at Australia Post and captain in the British Army, is pushing through a raft of changes at the 115-year-old Myer, including a round of voluntary redundancies unveiled last weekend to create a more flexible workforce that is based around more casual hours than permanent staff.

David Thomas, head of consumer research at investor group CLSA, said his biggest concern with Myer’s business model was too many underperforming stores, rather than its mix of brands.

The moves come as rival David Jones recently increased its sales at double the pace of Myer.

Festival fashion 'Bandana wid Denim'

A model displays this Andrea Lindo bandana and denim design.

WITH eight days to go before the country's 53 anniversary of Independence, the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) is urging Jamaicans to mark the occasion with fashion as was done in the early days of Festival.
This year the theme is 'Bandana wid Denim - Ketch di Fashion Riddim', the JCDC advised in a news release in which it said that the decision to reintroduce Festival Fashion allows designers, seamstresses and tailors islandwide to be creative with designs using our bandana combined with denim.
Chairman of the Festival Fashion Committee and show producer Weston Haughton explained that the bandana to be used is the larger print (madras), and not the small red and blue fine plaid that is used as our national costume.
On Monday, August 3, at Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre in Kingston, the public is invited to a show titled 'Fashion greets music', where some of the island's top designers and musicians will showcase their talent.

Ebay Closes Delivery Service EBay Now, Will Also Shut Down Its Fashion, Motors & Valet Apps

Following its split from PayPal last week, eBay announced this morning it’s closing down a number of standalone mobile applications, including eBay Valet, eBay Fashion and eBay Motors, and is retiring its on-demand delivery service eBay Now. On the latter item, the company says that eBay Now was “always intended” as a pilot program, and while it saw encouraging results, it will instead explore other delivery and pick-up and drop-off programs that are relevant to its customer base of 25 million sellers, and that cover a wider variety of inventory.
Features found within the other standalone applications will be integrated into the main eBay app, however.
The writing had been on the wall for eBay Now, which was already discontinued as a standalone application last year. At the time, the company said it was rethinking its plans for same-day delivery, and the high costs associated with running such a service. The service had originally launched in San Francisco in 2012, and later expanded to other regions, including San Jose, the Bay Area Peninsula, Manhattan, then Brooklyn and Queens, and finally Dallas and Chicago. It had the support of a number of major retailers as well, but ultimately, was a drain on eBay’s bottom line. It also was competing in a busy space where large companies like Amazon and Google were testing the waters, too, amid other on-demand delivery startups like Instacart and Postmates, for example.
EBay in November rolled eBay Now into the main website and mobile app, which the company says today “significantly reduced our dependency on a separate standalone service.” However, it says today it will discontinue eBay Now in the U.S. immediately, though it will continue to pilot test scheduled deliveries, a separate offering, in the U.K. It also continues to offer in-store pickups in the U.S., which is supported at a number of Best Buy and Toys R Us stores, for example.
“We’ve found that the types of things that people buy on eBay aren’t necessarily those that are in high demand for same-day delivery, and that same-day options for the most part exclude core eBay sellers who don’t have offline locations,” explained an eBay spokesperson, detailing the reasons behind eBay Now’s closure. “We want to enable the most relevant solutions for our customers, and offer those that are most in line with local shopping and delivery preferences around the world.”
Standalone Apps Shut Down, Too

Meanwhile, following its acquisition of clothing resale service Twice earlier this month, eBay is also today announcing its plans to discontinue its eBay Valet standalone mobile application. But, in this case, this doesn’t signal the end of eBay Valet itself – after all, expanding eBay’s “Sell For Me” service is what the addition of Twice’s tech and engineering team was all about. Instead, the company says that Valet will be integrated into the main eBay application in the future.
Launched last summer, eBay Valet rolled out as a mobile version of eBay’s “Sell for Me” online service, which was designed to make it easier for first-time sellers or anyone else who didn’t want to do with the hassles of setting up and managing their own listings an alternative to selling directly on eBay’s marketplace.

With eBay Valet’s app, customers were able to snap a photo of their items with their phone’s camera then narrate a product description in order to get an estimate from a professional seller about their item’s worth. They could also request a box for their items to make shipping easier, though this feature disappeared in later months.
According to an email sent out to eBay Valet users, eBay has decided to discontinue the standalone app on August 6th, and will incorporate the Valet service into the main eBay app later this year. The email implies there could be a lapse in between when the app is shut down and the new mobile experience is live, as eBay notes that customers can use eBay Valet on the web “in the meantime.”
In addition, eBay says it will be shutting down other standalone mobile applications, too, including eBay Fashion and eBay Motors. The former will be shut down in the “coming weeks” and the latter will be decommissioned “later this year.” The functionality of these apps will be integrated into eBay’s core apps for iPhone, iPad and Android later this year, too.
None of eBay’s standalone apps were all that popular. On iOS, for example, eBay Valet is ranked No. 1,177 in the Lifestyle category, according to App Annie’s most recent rankings, while Fashion is No. 650 and Motors is No. 184.
The company says its goal with all these closures is to make selling on eBay a simplified experience for its user base.
“As an early leader in mobile commerce we have created significant business value and insights from these special-purpose apps,” the company stated in an announcement. “Over the years we have integrated many of the insights, learnings, and functionality into our core mobile experiences.”

But in reality, the closures are more about making sure eBay’s resources are aimed at making its online marketplace successful, now that it doesn’t have PayPal’s revenue and growth to rely upon.
These aren’t the only standalone apps eBay has killed off over the years – it has also done away with offerings like eBay Instant Sale, eBay Exact, eBay Deals, Watch with eBay and more. In fact, few of eBay’s standalone efforts have really taken off, and after these new closures, the only apps published by eBay will be eBay’s core app and the barcode scanner RedLaser.
The post implies this may not be the last of eBay’s announcements on the clean-up front, noting that these closures are the “first phase of our sunset plans.” The news follows that of eBay’s decision to also unload its enterprise business for $900 million, and its selling of its Craigslist stake back to Craigslist.
eBay says the majority of its employees working on the closed apps and service have been assigned, but a handful have been laid off. We understand that number is about five full-time employees.

Caitlyn Jenner’s ESPY Awards Fashion Moment Is Major

It’s the moment everyone’s been waiting for: Caitlyn Jenner’s first major fashion outing. After tweeting last month about her wardrobe dilemma for the event, the television star has been honing her new sense of style in wrap dresses by Diane von Furstenberg, fitted bandage dresses from Herve Leger, and a white netted ensemble that wouldn’t look out of place on stepdaughter Kim Kardashian West. And earlier tonight, Caitlyn Jenner made her grand entrance at the ESPY Awards where she received the Arthur Ashe Courage Award.

Jenner sought help outside the family for her big night, working with Angelina Jolie Pitt’s stylist Jen Rade to put together a look that would have fit right in with Jolie Pitt’s closet. The long-sleeved white Atelier Versace column flattered Jenner’s athletic physique while the cinched waist simultaneously provided a feminine flair and touch of Old Hollywood glamour. Beladora’s emerald and pearl earrings and a deco-inspired diamond and sapphire bracelet provided the ideal amount of sparkle for her to shine in the spotlight.

Lewis Hamilton cuts a dapper figure in NYC after cosying up to Gigi Hadid at Fashion Week

Lewis Hamilton cuddles Gigi Hadid at Fashion WeekSPLASH/REX
Lewis looks dapper in white blazer while out in NYC
Lewis was spotted on the streets of SoHo, NYC, wearing a crisp white blazer jacket which he teamed with a black t-shirt and skinny black trousers.
He posed confidently for photographers, and finished off his look with a pair of black shoes and a gold chain around his neck.
The Formula One champ's outing comes after he was pictured cosying up to supermodel Gigi Hadid on Monday evening at Tijuana Picnic to toast the start of Men's Fashion Week.

Although Lewis has been romantically linked to both Gigi and her best friend Kendall Jenner, it seems like he can cross one of those off the list, because Gigi's boyfriend Joe Jonas joined the pair at the lavish event.

Scientists build a mathematical model that gives fashion advice

Researchers have developed a mathematical model that is able to assess whether a person is fashionably dressed and to give advice on how to make the outfit more fashionable.
The creators are IRI researchers Edgar Simo-Serra and Francesc Moreno-Noguer and University of Toronto researchers Sanja Fidler and Raquel Urtasun. The algorithm was presented in the paper "Neuroaesthetics in Fashion: Modeling the Perception of Fashionability" at the 2015 Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR), the world's most important conference in this field, which was held in Boston (USA) in June.
The aim of the work is to build mathematical models that are able to understand the concept of fashion, that is, what makes a particular form of dress fashionable or unfashionable, and based on that, to make recommendations on how to dress.
To do this, the researchers created an Internet fashion dataset of over 144,000 user posts with images and associated information. The new algorithm was then able to predict how fashionable the clothes in the images were by using the "likes" received by each user post.
To build the model, the scientists combined a deep neural network with a conditional random field probabilistic model that can take various factors into account, such as the type of garment, the kind of user and the scene behind the person. The system can predict how fashionable a person looks, and more importantly, give fashion advice to users.

Fashion’s new wanderlust: Coming to a season near you

I’m writing this on the road. It seems like you’re always on the road in fashion, these days. Over the last month or so, I’ve been to New York, Milan, Paris (twice) and now Rome. I skipped the regular trip to Florence, for the Italian menswear leg known as Pitti Uomo, in the middle.

This Rome trip is unexpected, though. Valentino has finished renovating its vast atelier on the Piazza Mignanelli, and thought it’d give us all a look. They cordoned off the square and presented their latest haute couture collection under the dying rays of the Roman sun. It was all rather spectacular.

It was also, I suspect, a portent of things to come. Because Valentino hadn’t gone off-piste alone.  They were following the likes of Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton, and now Gucci – who have all chosen to fly the press and a cadre of loyal clients out to shows for their pre-collections, off the beaten track of the traditional fashion calendar.

In pictures: Front row at Paris Fashion Week Haute Couture autumn/winter 2015

Pre-collections are a strange, amorphous lot, a no-man’s land with no rhyme, reason, or official schedule. Still, these jaunts work because we’ve nothing else to do (at least, in the mind of the designers). But when Tom Ford chose to take his autumn/winter 2015 collection to Los Angeles, adding another pitstop on the international calendar and sending a bunch of fashion editors skittering from east coast to west – rather than across the Atlantic to the London shows, which commenced on the same day – the system got its first great buck in about two decades. Because people abandoned a day or more of an established week in favour of seeing Ford’s renegade show. And, without realising, they’ve thus invited other designers to do the same. The collection Valentino showed in Rome was haute couture – the stuff we’ve seen since Sunday in Paris, where the label traditionally presents its wares. Why bother? Because its different – a way to mark yourself out.

That’s fine. The scarier thing, for me, is the implied breakdown of the entire system of fashion cities, of shows coordinated for convenience – and logistics, honestly. It’s about ensuring everyone can attend the damn things and see your clothes. How long before another major label decides that, rather than showing in one of fashion’s Big Four, they’ll take a break, drag everyone off-piste and out of their way to see a collection that could have been shown alongside all the others?

Give it a season.

I understand the wanderlust. But when fashion’s renegades pull away from traditional show weeks, what they also pull away from is a sense of community, and of comparison. They want to be considered as sole entities. But they’re not. They’re part of a fashion conversation, and that’s far more interesting than a monologue.
